The Church Buildings
Construction of the original wood-framed church began in 1894. The church developed and grew within this building until 1956 when the need for a larger sanctuary for worship was brought to reality. Construction began, and in 1957, the current building stands towering over Bull Street.
Earlier on in the life of the church, in 1924, the Parish House was
built. The building was renamed the Epting Parish Building after the
death of St. Paul's first pastor, Dr. Monroe J. Epting. This
building served and still serves as the primary facility for Sunday
School, meetings, as well as other functions. The third floor
originally was an auditorium and gymnasium. It was the largest stage
in that area of Savannah at the time it was originally constructed.
Since its construction, the Parish House has had several
renovations, including the addition of a partial fourth floor. The Parish House housed the Christian Day School from 1949 thru the late 1990s. The Day School has been replaced by a Pre-School that is open to the public. The Parish Building is currently undergoing major renovations that should be finished by the end of 2008.
Used as a facility for a variety of functions, the Activities Building was constructed and dedicated in 1992. It contains a full-size gymnasium, meeting room, office, concession area, restrooms, and showers. It has hosted many traveling youth groups, provided space for area Lutheran youth events, is utilized for congregational activities and used as a practice facility for various SCAD(Savannah College of Art and Design) sports programs.
Constructed and dedicated in 1994, Hoffner Hall was named in 1997 in
memory of Pastor Bill R. Hoffner, pastor of St. Paul's from 1972
until his death in 1995. It is a beautiful and functional building
with a spacious entrance foyer, a large multi-use hall with
break-out rooms, a formal dining room, an outdoor courtyard area,
stage area and institutional/caterer kitchen. It serves as the
fellowship center of the congregation for receptions, dinners and
Sunday School gatherings. The stage provides a facility for music,
drama and pageant activities for the congregation, pre-school and
community organizations.
